Ray Mckeown
Metis Lakota

“My philosophy as an artist is that only through working in traditional disciplines can I truly come to understand the how and why of the lives of a people who lived and prospered by utilizing only what nature provided them.”

A remarkable and talented beadwork and porcupine quill embroidery artist, Ray McKeown has been fascinated with the traditional arts of the Metis and Plains First Nations people from an early age. Inspired by his Lakota ancestry, he learned about the materials and techniques that were used prior to the introduction of trade goods. He often expresses his rare skills and knowledge through the creation of dolls. Ray’s passion has lead to a lifelong commitment to researching and continuing the traditions of his people.
